Though DON'T NOD hasn't really given much information on this setting, New Eden will apparently be a collection of communities in the wilderness of North America, which fits in historically with the game's 1695 time period. Succumbing to her wounds, Antea becomes the very thing she swore to destroy, and with the help of Red, she plans on finding a way to return to the mortal world.īanishers: Ghosts of New Eden will be primarily set in the titular location of New Eden. Together, the couple uses their talents to banish ghosts from communities across North America, until one day, Antea is mortally wounded in a failed mission. The year is 1695, and players take control of two ghost hunters, Antea and Red, known colloquially as Banishers. RELATED: Why the Life is Strange Franchise May Never Be Able to Replicate Chloe and Max's Success Banishers' New Eden Setting Seems Very Uniqueįrom the get-go, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden has a very unique premise. Set in 1695, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden drops players into the North American wilderness long before towns and cities were built on the land, potentially being one of the most unique settings in all of gaming. This departure doesn't just cover the game's tone and gameplay, however, as it also extends to its setting, which is very different from Life is Stange's modern suburban setting. But by far one of the most unique reveals of the night was Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, a new action game from Life is Strange developer DON'T NOD.Īn action game that sees players hunt down ghosts and banish them, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is quite the departure for developer DON'T NOD. ![]() ![]() Some users are outraged, and are blaming Mozilla for blocking the add-on without warning. This leaves the user in the lurch, as they have lost their priceless data. ![]() And now that the add-on has automatically been removed from the browser, and banned from the store, there is literally no way to install it again. Many users have lost access to all the bookmarks they had saved via FVD Speed dial. Now, while Mozilla banning the extension is good, it does pose some difficulties for users who relied on the add-on. FVD Speed Dial users are furious after losing access to bookmarks The add-on has repeatedly violated these terms despite Mozilla explicitly pointing them out. This add-on violates Mozilla's policies as search functionality provided or loaded by the add-on must not collect search terms or intercept searches that are going to a third-party search provider. Here's the message that is displayed on the add-on's page. This is the Web Archive version of the page, for reference. For those curious, here is the FVD Speed Dial listing on the AMO, which when visited shows an error that says the page cannot be found. If you had FVD Speed Dial installed in Firefox, you may find that it has automatically been removed. Since the developer had been warned earlier, this was a repeated offense, Mozilla decided that that was the last straw, and blocked the add-on. The controversial feature was re-added in FVD Speed Dial. Fast-forward to the present, and it appears someone didn't learn their lesson. The developer disabled the feature, and FVD Speed Dial was allowed to be hosted on the AMO. Having being caught red-handed, the extension's developer was told by Mozilla, to cease the practice. FVD would intercept search queries made by users, and redirect these web requests to a third-party search engine. The developer was Nimbus Web.Ībout a year ago, Mozilla discovered that the add-on was using a shady way to collect user data. The full name of the add-on is Speed Dial New Tab Page, 3D Start Page, Sync. ![]() ![]() ![]() So, if our object has the key “foo/bar/test.json” the console will show a “folder” foo that contains a “folder” bar which contains the actual object. However, if we use a “/” in our object key, the AWS S3 console will render the object as if it was in a folder. As written above, an object store does not use directories or folders but just keys. Key Delimiterīy default, the “/” character gets special treatment if used in an object key. They are identified by a key which is a sequence of Unicode characters whose UTF-8 encoding is at most 1,024 bytes long. Objects are the actual things we are storing in S3. An important thing to note here is that S3 requires the name of the bucket to be globally unique. Bucketsīuckets are containers of objects we want to store. Since then, a lot of features have been added but the core concepts of S3 are still Buckets and Objects. S3 was one of the first services offered by AWS in 2006. ![]() Additionally, we can provide metadata (data about data) that we attach to the object to further enrich it. So we might ask ourselves, how is an object store different from a file store? Without going into the gory details, an object store is a repository that stores objects in a flat structure, similar to a key-value store.Īs opposed to file-based storage where we have a hierarchy of files inside folders, inside folders,… the only thing we need to get an item out of an object store is the key of the object we want to retrieve. It is technically possible to store those binary files in Postgres but object stores like S3 might be better suited for storing unstructured data. But what if we want to store more than just plain data? What if we want to store a picture, a PDF, a document, or a video? Postgres is a relational database, very well suited for storing structured data that has a schema that won’t change too much over its lifetime (e.g. You are probably familiar with databases (of any kind). S3 stands for “simple storage service” and is an object store service hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) - but what does this exactly mean? This article is accompanied by a working code example on GitHub. If you want to go deeper and learn how to deploy a Spring Boot application to the AWS cloud and how to connect it to cloud services like RDS, Cognito, and SQS, make sure to check out the book Stratospheric - From Zero to Production with Spring Boot and AWS! You can change things like the filename format (in “Advanced”). If you haven’t played around in here, I recommend you do so. Keep in mind, your changes may take a while to propagate. Essentially though, you want to create a CNAME record for your subdomain (or domain if you’re not using a sub) that points to “s3.” In my case I created a CNAME “s” that points to S3. I’m not going to go into too much detail here as every DNS provider is a little different. You can select the region that works best for you (I selected “US Standard.” That should be it for the S3 side. NOTE: If you want to use a custom domain (ie s.), you must enter that as the bucket name. Click “Create Bucket” and in the modal, enter your preferred bucket name. Be sure to copy/paste these as you won’t be able to see them once you close the modal (and will need them later). Click “Manage Access Keys” to create a key. ![]() Just below the permissions section, is a “Security Credentials” section. Next up is giving the user an Access Key. In the “Permissions” section, click “Attach User Policy.” Search for “AmazonS3FullAccess” in the “Select Policy Template” list and click Select. To give an existing user access to manage your S3 buckets, go to IAM -> Users and select the user to edit. You may want to create a separate user for Monosnap to use, and give it full access to manage S3. I’m assuming you’ve already created an Amazon AWS account and are in general familiar with how to navigate the console. Monosnap has a built-in S3 integration which is pretty easy to set up. This was fine and dandy, but still had some annoyances, like the link taking a bit to copy. Originally, I had Monosnap saving to a folder on my Dropbox account. ![]() ![]()

Using this and similar studies as their basis, CF has championed the idea that you can get the same, or better, performance off of doing intense work like that done in the study. When this program was researched, they noted that VO2max increased by a large amount and that certain aerobic enzymes also increased. Tabata sprints and the high intensity misunderstandingĪ researcher named Tabata did a series of studies on untrained and then moderately trained individuals in which he gave them a workout that consisted of 20sec hard/10sec rest for 4minutes. Let’s use their main research backed claim to look into their claims. Their claim rests on their misunderstanding of VO2max as being equal to or critical to performance. They go on to claim that endurance training ages you faster and is detrimental to performance. The central claim is that you can get the same endurance benefits (or better) from doing high intensity work and limit any slower to moderate paced running. Getting beyond some of the basic philosophical tenets of CF that are ridiculous, let’s look at some of their claims in regards to endurance performance and training. You can’t just do work that is painful just because it hurts and expect to get better. But if you’ve been in the coaching business long enough you know that hard stupid work doesn’t get you anywhere. Being a specialist at something is apparently bad? Additionally, they really go after this hard work/pain = improvement and results idea. Because being good at all the other methods of establishing performance isn’t good enough, so now you’re judged based on some criteria that crossfit develops. ![]() They first created their own new performance metric on which you’re judged. Lastly, once you’re in they do something pretty creative. If you’ve ever watched late night infomercials, you might start to see some similarities… Further exploiting peoples natural habits, they promise better results with less time commitment, which in today’s “busy” world is probably the number one selling point for many products or ideas. They throw in some pseudoscience or misinterpretation of science and they’ve bolstered their selling point. We’ll go over this straw man tactic a bit later, but they try and cultivate this idea that just because it’s different and new means its got to be better. It’s simply mix short intensity work with slightly longer high intensity work and that’s all you get.Ĭrossfit exploits a couple different natural reactions people have to get people on their bandwagon. In CF this refers to a variety of high strength circuits and in CFE it combines this with high intensity intervals like the famous Tabata “sprints” (sets of 20sec hard/10sec easy). It’s basically a set of random workouts that are high intensity circuit based workouts. Since it’s a question I get asked a lot, lets take a look at crossfit endurance.Ĭrossfit Endurance and CF in general is a randomized non-system of training. If you were at my presentation at the American Distance Summit in North Carolina, you got to hear me take a few jabs at crossfit (and Renato Canova even threw in a jab or two!). I wouldn’t take much offense to crossfit and would let it do its own thing, except when you start telling people that this is the way of the future and that Ryan Hall would run faster if he did this stuff, then I have a problem (Yes, CFE founder has made this claim)įor this post, we’ll focus on Crossfit Endurance because it got some major publication in this month’s Runner’s World and has been getting some hype lately. ![]() I’m writing this blog to give a 2nd opinion and to combat the marketing hype that surrounds crossfit. I’ve always wanted to write a blog post about it, but the article in this months Runner’s World has finally pushed me over the edge.
